Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a disorder in which the ovaries produce an inordinate amount of androgens, male sex hormones that are typically seen in modest amounts in women. The name polycystic ovarian syndrome refers to the numerous tiny cysts (fluid-filled sacs) that grow in the ovaries.
